Bright Green Sparks Shine

On the 30th of June The Bright Green Sparks went to the National Park Environmental Day.  We all thought the day was a great succuss.

First we did a web2spider activity. Web2spider is where you get a spray bottle and you get two identification graphs. These graphs identify which spider made which web weather it be an orb spider or not. After we had walked our way though the bush doing web2spider we started to walk back on our way back we were just looking at our native bushland and animals it was very interesting.

Second we had recess then got spilt into groups. The groups were for different actives they were:     Recycling active, no dig box and web of life.   All of these actives are all very interesting and well done. They were all great and useful now I think all the green sparks will put those things into there house and school.

After that we had lunch and all the schools told other schools what they were trying to achieve at there school.

Then we all got presented with a participation certificate and a "Down to Earth" book.  The school got presented with 3 no dig gardens each containing parsley and lettuce. The school also got four seedlings that are thyme. Then Greg donated a plant to each school (we are not sure what type of plant it is), we also got a Cool it book.

Bright Green Sparks

There is an environmental group formed in Engadine West Public School called the Bright Green Sparks. It is a privilege, to be apart of this and work for  my school, environment and school peers.

This year we are going to get a worm farm and a veggie patch in Term3.  In 2009 we built a native plant garden on our back grass/playing field.

We are applying for a grant of $1000 to get light sensors in our playground. These will help our electricity consumption because once you leave the school the sensors will pick that up and the lights will turn off.

Web graphs and sunny portal has been a great help to show us how much energy we have been using and generating from our solar panels. We have been giving fortnightly reports on our energy consumption, generation and our new initiatives. We are also starting to give reports in our student paper, news letter and Engadine news. We have water tanks to help with our water consumption. In every class we have recycling box and any scrap paper we put in there. Every Thursday, recycling monitors will visit all the classes in the school and collect their recycling and take it to our recycling skip bin. At the moment we only have one sort of bin around the school but now we will have three; one for recycling; one for fruit break (worm farm); and one for non-recyclable waste. We will have 36 new bins in total.

Think sustainability, go green!
