Kindergarten

Kindergarten started off by weighing different things in the sand pit to see if we could get our scales to balance. Next we moved on to playing games of snakes and ladders. We then went on to work with different shapes. We made patterns with shapes and then we explored curved and straight lines. We had fun!

 Year 1

Year 1 had enormous fun participating in several activities that focussed on Measurement. The activities included: using their feet and hands as an informal measurement to measure the length of everyday items in the classroom.  They measured and compared their height.  They also traced their hands on grid paper and measured size using unifix cubes.  They found the capacity of objects using different items to fill them such as dry pasta shells and then counted the amount used.  They made different shaped containers with paper and measured their capacity as well. Overall it was an exciting time for all the children, trying different things and moving around the various Year 1 classes.

 Year 2

The students in Year 2 participated in a variety of Mathematical activities. The students who came to Mr Murphy were timing how many times they could bounce a ball, skip rope, throw and catch a ball and run a course in one minute. The children were amazed at their results and achievements.

 Year 3

Year 3 did a range of hands-on activities; Designing a large polygon with string and using stopwatches to determine the time to get around the perimeter with a golf ball and spoon. Following directions using compasses. Students had to move around a giant checkerboard following the directions rolled on a dice.  If they ended up off the board they were out. A great design activity was also participated in where students had to build small cars and measure the distance they travelled! So much fun had by all!

 Year 4

Year Four students participated in a range of activities, including learning about perimeter and graphing by doing putt-putt golf; experimenting with capacity to make water timers; and using their interactive whiteboards to improve their number skills.

 Year 5

Year Five students enjoyed a variety of learning experiences. They had great fun mixing specific combinations of food colourings by converting between percentages and fractions to create new colours; using measuring skills to design paper planes and estimate distances flown; measuring  the length and width of the cricket pitch and other distances around the school using trundle wheels.

 Year 6

Stage 3 students participated in three of the following mathematics learning tasks. They became aeronautical engineers and then participated in an air show and measured the performance of aircraft. To increase their sporting prowess they studied the angles of throwing between 15 and 75 degrees to arrive at a maximum distance. They worked through a range of higher order working mathematically tasks in group teams. Using formulas students developed their artistic skills in developing new interesting colours based on percentages of combinations of different colours. 1 cubic cm = 1mL of water = 1 gram they had to prove it! Working in our native garden following an adventure trial, students utilise a range of measuring equipment to explore and consolidate learning. Students made estimations, measured and explored perimeter and area using trundle wheels and had great discussions about the significance of dimensions. Best of all they proved mathematics is fun!
